Margherita Santoro, DDS, MA

Dr. Santoro holds a D.D.S. Degree from Columbia University, New York, and she has been practicing Orthodontics since 1992. At Columbia University Dr. Santoro also earned her 3-year Orthodontic Degree and a Master Degree in Dental Science, and was recruited in 1998 as a member of the teaching staff.
As an Associate Professor, Dr. Santoro was chosen in 2005 for the position of Postdoctoral Program Director of the Division of Orthodontics. She held the position until 2011, when she transitioned to full-time private practice in Acton, Massachusetts. She still maintains a part-time affiliation with Columbia University for research purposes. Her duties as a Program Director included direct supervision of dentists as they treated patients in a large clinical setting, in their pursue of the post-graduate training in Orthodontics. She also designed and upgraded on a regular basis the specialty academic curriculum, and supervised the clinical testing of newly introduced materials and techniques.
The excellent relations with the Columbia University teams -and practicing clinical orthodontics in Manhattan for 14 years before moving to MA- offered an unique opportunity to treat , with an ethical and compassionate approach, many patients affected by very complex malocclusions, requiring special treatment and requesting second opinions. Dr. Santoro expertise ranges from interdisciplinary treatment for children and adults to customized treatment plan for the patients who presents with the most complex orthodontic problems, including surgical and growth related problems, and medically compromised patients. Her role has placed Dr. Santoro in the position of being exposed over the years to all the recent technological innovations and biological discoveries concerning the orthodontic profession.
Dr. Santoro was also the responsible Orthodontist of the Craniofacial/Cleft Palate Team at Columbia University/Presbyterian Hospital, where she collaborated with surgeons, geneticists, speech therapists, physicians and pediatricians, psychologists and ENT specialists to provide the appropriate care for young children affected by craniofacial syndromes.
Dr. Santoro's research activities have focused on the study of metal alloys, in cooperation with the School of Engineering at Columbia University, and Root Resorption as a consequence of orthodontic treatment. Her publications have been included in the reading list for the American Board of Orthodontics Exams, and she has been honored with several awards, including the Orthodontic Alumni Award for Clinical Excellence and the Award for Research Excellence. She has become a proud member of very selective associations such as the E.H. Angle Society of Orthodontists and the Glenda Garvey Society,
In 2004, Dr. Santoro was the recipient of the Subtenly, Baker, Eastman Award from American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (AAOF).
Dr. Santoro has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally, she is Past President of the Columbia University Orthodontic Alumni Society, and she served on the Editorial Boards of the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Angle Orthodontist, World Journal of Orthodontics, and Orthodontic Practice. She currently serves as the immediate Past President of the Angle East - Eastern Chapter of the EHASO (E.H. Angle Society of Orthodontists).
Dr. Santoro obtained the full American Board of Orthodontics Certification and membership of the following organizations:
